Frequently Asked Questions about UVA, UVB & Far-Red Supplemental LED Bars

What are the different types of UV light?

There are three main types of ultraviolet light:

  • UVC (100-280 nm): Filtered out by the ozone layer and extremely dangerous to living organisms.
  • UVB (280-320 nm): Makes up about 0.2% of sunlight and can damage DNA, but also enhances production of beneficial compounds in plants.
  • UVA (320-400 nm): Makes up about 3% of sunlight and does not harm DNA. Helps increase plant resilience.

How much UV light do plants need?

For optimal results, we recommend using about 10 watts of UV light per square meter. For example, a 1.2m x 1.2m grow tent would benefit from 16-32 watts of UV lighting. Supplemental LED grow light bars with UVA and UVB can provide the right amount of ultraviolet light to your plants.

When should you give plants UV light?

To increase the production of beneficial secondary metabolites like terpenes and flavonoids, use UV grow lights for up to 2 hours per light cycle in the last 3 weeks of flowering. This short exposure is enough to stimulate the plants' defense mechanisms and boost potency.

What are the benefits of UV light for plants?

Supplementing with UVA and UVB light offers several key benefits:

  • Increased resistance to pests, mould, and mildew by thickening cell walls
  • Higher flower quality, potency, and weight due to enhanced terpene and flavonoid production
  • Destruction of harmful microorganisms, especially with wavelengths shorter than 300 nm (UVB)
  • Stimulation of up to 15 different defence proteins for improved stress resistance

How can UV light prevent pests and diseases?

UV grow lights help prevent infestations and diseases in two main ways. First, UVA increases cell wall thickness and overall plant health, making them more resilient. Second, UVB can directly destroy harmful microorganisms like bacteria, fungi, and some insects. Using UV light throughout the grow cycle is an effective way to minimize issues with pests and pathogens.
